There’s only one day annually that it is socially acceptable for kids to dress up however they like, but for students within Delcom schools, they get an extra day.
A tradition that was started just two school years ago quickly has become one of Delta’s most popular. Senior Mackemzie Lipps and Corbin Malchow came up with the idea of Trunk or Treat their sophomore year, the same year they had it implemented into Delta’s annual routine.
“My dad works at Remax and they do a trunk or treat,” Lipps said. “I thought it was a great idea and that we should host one here.”
Although Lipps and Malchow worked hard on turning their idea into a reality, they weren’t able to do it all by themselves
Mrs. Amanda Craw, an English teacher, liked the idea enough that she was willing to help the two out.
Eventually they were able to convince the school board to give it a shot. That first year in the Fall of 2022 they had nine trunks total, which was a success in their books.
This year Delta will be hosting the third annual Trunk or Treat on the west side of the parking lot. It will be from 6-7 p.m. tonight (Oct. 29).
There are an estimated 20 trunks to be in attendance this year, more than doubling the amount they had the first year of Trunk or Treat.
As one can imagine, there are several hundred kids who show up, and preparing for something like this could become stressful.
“It’s actually not that hard to prepare for, but It’s definitely a little bit nerve wracking not knowing if everybody’s going to have what they need,” Craw said.
This year will be the last year Malchow and Lipps have to prepare for Trunk or Treat, being that they are seniors.
Although the two seniors will be leaving next year, the tradition will continue under two new names. Sophomores Kathryn Enos and Ava Flowers will eventually take over the role of hosting Trunk or Treat.
“They asked me to take over and I thought it was a good idea that it sticks around,” Enos said.
Enos and Flowers plan to keep Trunk or Treat around till they are seniors and hope the tradition continues to pass on.
