Teachers always emphasize not to use ChatGPT, but why?

ChatGPT can help you, English teacher Mrs. Amanda Craw said, so why be so against it?

“It can help you get ideas for things, but don’t have ChatGPT do everything,” Mrs. Craw said.

Like everything there are pros and cons to using it.

“The pros of using ChatGPT is it’s a good way to learn information quickly and get answers quickly,” Mrs. Craw said.

On the other hand there are some obvious cons.

“The cons are it can create shortcuts that are tempting to abuse, it can provide inaccurate information, it can limit creativity and critical thought, and it can be difficult to use well,” English teacher Mr. James Lodl said.

ChatGPT may eventually be integrated into an everyday school day. In fact, Mr. Lodl said “it’s too big not to be.”

According to chalkbeat.org, which is an online educational reporting site, some school systems are using ChatGPT in a creative way.

“A total of 112 schools are having artificial intelligence plan their lessons and differentiate content for students depending on their abilities, as well as offer tutoring and feedback to students,” according to chalkbeat.org.

Although it can be helpful there are still consequences to using ChatGPT to do your work. At Delta High School the consequences of using ChatGPT to complete your assignment are a 0 on the assignment  for your first offense.

For your second offense it’s 50% off the 9-week grade and for your third offense it’s 50% off your semester grade.

There is a right way to use ChatGPT or other AI websites. Learning and adapting to new technology is obviously different for everyone.

“Do the hard stuff yourself and use ChatGPT to augment it,” Lodl said

The problem with abusing ChatGPT doesn’t end at the high school. The consequences at a college level can be suspension and even expulsion, depending on the school.

The way teachers find out if you use AI or  ChatGPT can be confusing for some students, but some teachers have begun to master it.

We have a program called TurnItIn,” Lodl said. “This program can determine if AI was used and to what extent AI was used. I have tested it myself and it was accurate in detecting use of AI. There are also other methods and tools to detect AI.”

Sophomore Lilah Carter, is one of the new writing tutors.

“It’s important to learn how to write properly because ChatGPT isn’t going to write a professional email for you,”  Lilah said.

ChatGPT can harm a student  when trying to learn how to write but will also harm your future if you don’t learn for yourself.

“ChatGPT isn’t going to be able to write a job application for you, ChatGPT isn’t going to be able to write a eulogy for you,” Lilah said.

Yet ChatGPT is still a good tool to learn how to use.

“Either you learn how to command AI or you’ll be replaced by it,” Mr. Lodl said.
