Finals Re-‘Exam’ined

By Max Calhoun

How many days are the Delta High School final exams?

A. 3
B. 4
C. 2
D. 5
E. None of the above

If you said B, you’re wrong. The correct answer this year is A.

Starting at the end of quarter 4, Delta is moving from four days of finals to a three-day finals schedule with tests taking place just after Memorial Day on May 27, 28 and 29.

With more and more students not being in school on final days due to not having a final, Principal Ms. Joey G ossett and former Principal Mr. Chris Conley came up with a solution.

Before Mr Conley left to be the superintendent at Cowan early last fall, he and Ms. Gossett discussed changing the schedule from what has been used in recent years. They wanted the students who needed extra time to study to have that.

“One of the biggest concerns we noticed was that we had the four-day schedule and a lot of students seemed to finish early (with each test),” Ms. Gossett said. “And I think they are not needing as much time, so we could use that extra day to have just basic review for the finals.”

The school’s building reps surveyed the teachers and decided that it would be accepted by most teachers to approve the schedule change. This also gives the teachers the extra time they need for final preparation. The new exam times will be an hour and 15 minutes long, which is a shorter time than they used to be.

The administration hopes to leave the students less stressed with fewer final days and more days to prepare.

Test schedule

The first day of finals, Tuesday, has the most exams with three. The first will be 2nd period from 9:10-10:25 a.m., then 4th period 12:30-1:45 p.m., and ending the day with 6th period from 2:15 to 3:30 p.m.

Then on Wednesday there will be the first period exam from 9:10-10:25 a.m., then finishing up with 7th period from 2:15-3:30 p.m.

Ending the finals week on Thursday is 3rd period 9:10-10:25 a.m. and finally ending the year with your 5th period final at 2:15 until the final bell rings at 3:30 p.m.

Mixed in between Wednesday and Thursday are locker cleanouts for all grades. Juniors and seniors will clean out on Wednesday with the seniors doing so during 3rd period then the juniors following up while in 5th period.

On Thursday the sophomores will go first in 2nd period and the freshmen will clean out during 6th period.

Although seniors are taking their last final, for this new system, it’s just beginning.
