Seeking and Keeping

By Lilly Mizner

Some people may think collecting seashells is unusual and a waste of time, but to freshman Julia Hendershot they have value and represent memories of fun vacations.

“One time I found one underneath a tree and it was ginormous,” Hendershot said.

Julia started collecting seashells when she was three and continues to collect them. She is now at about 500 seashells.

“My mom loved doing it and I just followed her tradition,” Hendershot said.

Julia got into collecting them because she’s been to multiple beaches and lakes. In fact, her family has a lake house.

She has found seashells in Florida and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Her favorite seashell is shaped like a heart.

Sophomore Shaelyn Davis collects sunglasses and is at 25 pairs right now.

She started collecting them when she was in Tennessee at a little boutique and bought four pairs. She intends to get more.

Her most expensive pair of sunglasses cost $150 and was gifted to her. That pair has actual gold flakes in the ear pieces. Her favorite pair is thick red rectangle sunglasses.
She enjoys having different sunglasses that will go with certain outfits, so she’ll have a pair of sunglasses for every outfit.

Freshman Zane Berry collects baseball bats. He has 17 bats and wants to keep collecting them.

He started collecting baseball bats when he was 4.

He collects bats because he uses them and over time they get worn out, so he keeps them and gets a new one.

“Baseball bats mean baseball and dedication to me,” Zane said.

He’s played in national tournaments so he knows a good baseball bat costs about $500.

He watches videos on Youtube to see how good certain bats are, and he sees how far they can hit.

His favorite bat based on looks is his Atlas, which is black, teal, pink and green. His favorite one based on how well it works is his Goods.

He’s played pitcher, catcher, and center field.

Freshman Elijah Carter collects comic books. He started collecting them when he was 12 because he likes how they look and they bring out his true self.

“It’s a cool design that brings pop in your room, and it’s just pretty cool to collect this item,” Elijah said.

Elijah has around 50 comic books and said he will keep collecting them. He leaves them on his wall and shelves when they are not in use.

His favorite comic book is the Marvel Knight Spider-Man.

“Best comic book I’ve read of all time. It’s a beautiful color,” Elijah said.

Elijah gets his comic books from the flea market. His grandpa spends $10 or more on them.

“I like them because they bring out my true self,” Elijah said.
