The Grind Doesn’t Stop

By Landon Williams

The time of the year where students become kids, the sun beats down for 15 hours, and the plans for the day are still undecided.

These hot, carefree days are what students look forward to.

But for some people some plans are never put into action, and for one reason.

Money.

In today’s day and age many things involve money.

For many teenagers this is one of their only problems in summer, but here at Delta a few students found a solution to this problem.

In some cases their solution wouldn’t be ideal because it involves working, but these three students would rather have money and put their plans into action.

Senior Marcus Bright started his own business in late January of last year. It started with some snow removal and gradually progressed into mowing and other landscaping projects.

“I started shoveling some driveways and stuff but It really kicked off last April,” Bright said. “I got  probably six or seven clients last year and just started mowing those all spring and all summer.”

Bright is currently a one-man army tackling all these jobs and projects by himself.

At the end of the weekend Bright takes home every bit of money that was earned, which makes all the work worth it.

On average Bright is making $500 per weekend.

About a month ago Bright got off to a rough start to his weekend but managed to not only salvage it but set a new record in his business.

Bright made a total of $1,700 that weekend.

“I had a lot of stuff going wrong, my trailer wheel  fell off. I had to go get a new wheel, but over the two days, it was probably 20 hours total,” Bright said. “On Saturday I woke up at 7 in the morning and then I didn’t stop working until 8 at night. That was probably my busiest day.”

Bright’s one-man business has its pros along with its cons.

One of the biggest pros is that he gets to take home 100 percent of the money he makes. The biggest con is that he has no one to help him with the work.

Not only does Bright face this challenge but a fellow student not only works solo but also works in the same field as Bright.

Gavin Case, also a senior at Delta, is self-employed, working toward a better life for himself.

Case does lawn care by himself. Last year was his first year attempting to work at this business.

It ended up being a success, bringing in $7,000 at the end of the summer.

Case has carried on his business this summer in hopes to grow in profit.

“I’m excited to see how this year goes considering last year went better than expected,” Case said.

Fortunately for many people that have jobs, they have other employees to help relieve the weight from their shoulders.

Senior Myla Fink is one of these fortunate people to be able to work with others.

Fink is currently working at Parlor Doughnuts and has acquired a shift leader position.

She is currently working four to five days out of the week. Managing this with school work could become stressful. Fink is capable of managing both of these without a problem.

Not only does she think that working is important, but she also believes that working at a younger age has its benefits.

“I think it’s important to work at a young age because people need to learn how to deal with their money,” Fink said. “I’ve been working since the end of my sophomore year. I definitely feel a lot more responsible financially.”

All three students have not only created an opportunity to make money for themselves but also the opportunity to learn about financial situations early.

They all plan on attending college and continuing to work at their current jobs.

But for the meantime, they are sticking to the routine.
